The Seiden’s Fur Building, located at the northeast corner of 10th and Broadway, has been the subject of much discussion in recent years. It was spared from the wrecking ball at the last moment when Iconic Development, led by Chris Sally, stepped in to preserve the property.
The 7500sf building, which is the oldest within the Downtown Loop, was to be redeveloped into commercial space. Construction began shortly after Sally purchased the property with a new roof being added, tuckpointing work completed, and the original window sizes were cut back into the second story. The property eventually showed up on commercial real estate listings as a “for lease” option for both office and retail space.
But it seems like plans might be changing a bit here as a preliminary project code meeting was requested yesterday by Chris Sally and architects from DRAW. The change of plans calls for the upper floor to be turned into 3 apartments (a change from the office space) while the first floor and basement become a restaurant space.
The slight change in plans is a good sign that the intent is still to restore the building and make it active again. One more vacant building recalled to life in Downtown is always of benefit to the neighborhood and city.
