A proposal for affordable housing on a present-day grassy lot at 7824-30 Floyd Street in Downtown Overland Park is starting to move through the approval process.
Proposed by “Friends of JCDS” (Johnson County Developmental Supports), the proposed building will rise 3-stories and include 17 apartments, a ground floor gallery space, and office for Friends of JCDS. A small parking lot will be built on the south side of the building. Design is by Kansas City-based SixTwentyOne Architects.
Per the development application…
Tenants of the residential units will primarily be individuals served by Johnson County Developmental supports (more than 50% of the units) with the remainder of the units planned to house other individuals that have disabilities and/or quality as having low or extremely low income under applicable guidelines.
The proposed building features a modern design that’s clad in a mixture of brick, wood, and metal with cutouts for green roofs. The building abides by the regulations set in the Downtown Overland Park form based district.

The project is scheduled to go before the City of Overland Park Planning Commission on June 9th.
Friends of JCDS’s proposal is the latest new project for Downtown Overland Park. Others include the “PadelKC” club at 77th and Floyd (approved), “Urban Edge” a 36-unit apartment complex at 79th and Newton (under construction), a new farmers market (under construction), and a new 226-unit apartment building at 8036 Metcalf (proposed).
The gallery below includes additional renderings and a map showing the project’s location in relation to the rest of Downtown Overland Park.
