Despite having been under construction since December, the owners of the KC Current, Marquee Development, City officials and others gathered at Berkley Riverfront Park on March 26th to celebrate a ceremonial groundbreaking for phase 1 of the $800 Million+ “KC Riverfront” development

The project, originally discussed in 2023 with renderings unveiled in April 2024, aims to create a dense neighborhood at Berkley Park. Everything about the development breaks from what we’ve seen built at Berkley Park, which makes sense considering Palmer Square Real Estate (KC current Ownership) and Marquee Development tapped Perkins Eastman as the design architect of this project. Perkins Eastman also designed Washington DC’s “Wharf” development.

Phase 1, which costs $200 Million, consists of:

  • 429 apartments
  • 48,000sf of retail and restaurant space
  • 2 buildings
  • 2+ acres of new park space
  • Reimagined riverfront promenade
  • Hidden parking (in garages wrapped by the new buildings)

It’s also located within a 5 minute walk of the future KC Streetcar Riverfront stop.

Our district project will bring apartment homes, restaurants, bars, and businesses back to the water – it will transform our skyline and make Kansas City’s waterfront the new hub for energy in our city. We are thrilled to continue our investment in the Berkley Riverfront to create a world-class waterfront for generations to come – Angie and Chris Long, co-founders and co-owners of the KC Current.

Fans attending KC Current games this season, as well as visitors to Berkley Park, will have a front row seat to the construction of this phase of the development. For fans of the Current, a future front plaza will become a meeting and rally space before and after games. For visitors to Berkley Park, the new buildings will bring an assortment of restaurants and shops as well as a reimagined riverfront promenade.

Phase 1 will be delivered throughout 2026. VCC Construction is the general contractor. Klover Architects is the architect record while Perkins Eastman is the design architect. PortKC is the owner of Berkley Riverfront Park and helped facilitate this development through the issuing of $800 Million in bonds.
