The Crossroads skyline will evolve a little bit more in the coming years as construction begins on “The Refinery”.
Located at 1818-22 Main, the site of a recently demolished former nightclub and historic bank building, the 16-story, 191ft tall tower will add 147 new apartments and 1000sf of commercial space to the vibrant Crossroads neighborhood and to the Streetcar line. A parking garage, accessed from the alley, will feature 113 parking spaces. The Refinery also represents Copaken Brooks’s third residential building, and tallest, to be constructed in the Crossroads neighborhood in recent years.
Designed by Generator Studio, who has their office a few blocks away near 16th and Baltimore, the tower will be clad in metal panels of varying shades of gray along with some beige brick and wood accents on the lower floors. According to the architect, the building is designed to echo back to the art deco styling of the past, which is visible on the facade that fronts Main Street (the step backs and a metal detail that runs up the length of the tower).

PortKC issued bonds to help facilitate the development. In exchange for the incentives, 15 of the 147 apartments will be designated as affordable for those earning 60% of the area’s median income (AMI).
The Refinery will cost $48.1 Million to build. Centric Construction is serving as the general contractor. Construction will progress throughout 2025 and 2026 with the first residents able to move in come late 2026.
